Questions for Last Lesson of the Afternoon

1a. What are the persona's feelings described in the first three stanzas of this poem? Explain how the poet described these feelings through the use of alliteration, metaphor and pun.
1b. How is the tone of anger in this poem illustrated?

1a.
The persona is feeling angry, impatient and desperate in the first 3 stanzas. He used some literary devices to describe this, including alliteration, metaphor and pun. In the first stanza, the persona was feeling impatient about the student's lack of interest in learning. This can be seen from: “Them again on a quarry of knowledge they hate to hunt.” This uses the device pun, where quarry in this case is used to describe the variety of knowledge. The persona feels that the students hate to hunt for the great variety of knowledge out there. So, the persona is impatient, that the students do not wish to learn in this sentence. The persona also thinks that the students are very rude. It is shown in the sentence: “My pack of unruly hounds! I cannot start.” This shows that the students are very rude. Metaphor is used in this sentence, the word hound. Hound is the meaning of dogs. In this sentence, the persona is angry at the students for being so rude and wild.

In the second stanza, the persona is impatient about what these work would do good for him. It can be seen from: “I am sick, and what on earth is the good of it all?”This shows that the persona does not understand what good all these work does for him. The sentence uses pun. The word sick is a pun, where another meaning is where a person is ill. In this case, the meaning is a person cannot stand a certain thing anymore, and here, the persona cannot stand the students anymore.

In the the third stanza, the persona is emphasizing that he will not take the lack of concern from the students anymore. It can be shown from: “Their dross of indifference; and take the toll, of their insults in punishments?-I will not!-” This shows that the persona does not want to punish himself with the student's lack of concern and their insults. Pun is used with the word toll, where the meaning is punishment in this case.

1b.
The persona use three types of illustrating the tone of anger: Personification, Literary devices and choice of words. Firstly, the persona uses personification. An example of personification is: “Goes down the same abyss.” This example gives a more powerful impact on the reader as the learning of theirs goes lost fowever, infinitely, not just forgotten. This lets the poem become more interesting and lets the idea get through through a more proffesional way. This also lets the reader know that the persona is feeling angry, that what he had taught had all gone into total waste.

The second type is literary devices. Literary devices such as pun is used in this poem. An example is : “I am sick, and what on earth is the good of it all?” This example used the pun sick. Puns give a poem a special feeling to it, and sometimes, different meanings could be used. In this case, 'sick' has few meanings, including being ill, and in this case, being unable to stand it anymore. Puns can make the poems interesting.

The third type is choice of words. The choice of words is very important in imprinting a solid meaning into the poem. An example is: “Of several insults of blotted pages, and scrawl.” The choice of words is the use of blotted pages. Blotted pages can create the image of messy work done and poor work quality. This is the impression when someone sees this. So, this is very important as it creates an image of the poem and imprints an impression. In this case, it imprints the impression that he is angry at the messy work done by the students.

Article review

Article
Typhoon slows down Internet

SOME Singapore Internet users may be experiencing slowdowns on the Information Superhighway, especially when trying to access websites hosted in the United States and Taiwan.

Typhoon Morakot, which has triggered Taiwan's worst flooding in 50 years, has damaged the Asia-Pacific Cable Network 2 submarine cable system through which bytes of information travel.

This means that people trying to connect to gaming servers in the US or trying to instant message friends overseas may find it difficult to connect.

A SingTel spokesman said that restoration works on the cable system have begun.

'Our engineers are in the process of diverting Internet traffic to other cable systems. We expect the situation to return to acceptable levels within the next 24 hours,' he said.

The last time a major outage happened was in December 2006, when quakes off Taiwan severed several cables at once, causing the Net to go down.

Review

The typhoon at Taiwan is very serious and has caused many lives. Now, the typhoon has even caused the internet to slow down due to the the damage of wires. I think that the wires at the Taiwan area should be more well protected as Taiwan is a earthquake and typhoon-prone area and damage are often caused to these wires. This will be a big influence to the world, by letting the internet go down at United States and other countries because of a natural disaster at the other end of the world.

I have a few suggestions to prevent this problems from occurring again. They can protect the wires by either enhancing the covering of the wires or adding additional wires somewhere else, to let diverting of the signals fast if something happened to the others. They can also change the place where these important wires are situated, like changing them to places where natural disasters are rare, so that the chance of damage to them can be minimized. Although the damage this time is only slowing down the internet, the last time in December 2006 has caused the net to go down. The next time, the same thing may happen, or worst, something worse may happen.

Favourite Food

Ramen

Ramen, is a type of Japanese soup noodle originated from China. The noodle is often topped with seaweed, sliced pork or corn. The reason why Ramen is my
favourite food is because of its fragrance, taste and its delicious noodles.

The smell of the ramen itself is enough to let you drool. The pure fragrance of the miso or soya soup from afar is still as rich as ever and would taste even better than you smelled it.

The soup is so rich and well-flavoured that it would still leave the rich taste in your mouth even after hours. I like the soup even more if it is made from pork bones and is cooked slowly fors hours into its rich taste. You would surely remember the so fragrant taste 0f the soup.

Th
e noodles are so chewy and has absorbed the rich soup into itself and contains the richness of the soup. The noodles can be drawn into various sizes and my favourite is the straight, where the noodles has the best texture and taste.

These are the main reasons why I like ramen so much and why it is my favourite food. I will add some pictures on the ramen.

3. Why is it important for students to keep up to date with the news? Share some tips on how students can keep up with what is happening around them and around the world.

What if one day, a mutated H1N1 virus has been discovered. It spreads through any body contact and is lethal. We would NEED to know right? But without a clue of this, we will still go through body contact like shaking hands. Without knowing it, you may be infected. This is an example on how important keeping up to date with the news is important.
Keeping up to date with the news is easy. Just spend maybe half an hour reading today's newspapers and know of of the world's news. Or you can watch the daily news telecast on television.

About:
1. What are your thoughts about home learning? Is it more effective than learning in school?

Home learning, it is as stated, learning from home. Home learning may sound fun, staying at home, but it can be tiring too. You have to continue sitting on the chair in front of the computer, for straight 6 hours or so. Even though there are time for breaks, the thought of returning to the computer is...bad. But opportunists will take the time to slack off, or play computer games while doing at the same time. Discussions are mostly empty, with uncontactable people busily enjoying themselves.
I think that learning at home is not as effective as learning in school. In school, the teacher can specifically explain the questions that we do not understand. However, at home, all we can do is email the teacher and have a written and unspecific explanation. Also, as stated before, the students will take the opportunity to slack and play computer games. No one will know if someone is not doing their work seriously.
Conclusion: It is better to learn in school, with approachable teachers and watchful eyes, better than at home slacking the time off.

Lesson 3: Analysing and Composing a poem

Analyze this:
The Son is in Secondary School by Affran Sa'at

My badge has a Latin motto
Hope for the future
The future is hope
Or something
At times black crows try to interrupt
When we sing the National Anthem
It is difficult to maintain
The whiteness of my shoes
Especially on Wednesdays
I must admit there is something quite special
About the bare thighs of hardworking scouts
The Malay chauffeurs
Who wait for my schoolmates
Sit on the car park kerb
Telling jokes to one another
Seven to the power of five is unreasonable
On Chinese New Year
Mrs Lee dressed up
In a sarong kebaya
And sang Bengawan Solo
The capital of Singapore is Singapore
My best friend did a heroic thing once
Shaded all A's
For his Chinese Language
Multiple-choice paper
In our annual yearbook
There is a photograph of me
Pushing a wheelchair and smiling
They caught me
At the exact moment
When my eyes were actually closed

Analyze:

This poem is a free verse poem. It has no regular rhythm or rhyme, which makes the poem sound more natural. It some gives the reader and author more freedom, where the reader can choose how to read and the writer will not be restricted to a rhythm or rhyme only, which will let the the writer express more on the topic.

Lesson 2

Kay Ryan

Having won the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize, a Guggenheim fellowship, an Ingram Merrill Award, a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Union League Poetry Prize, the Maurice English Poetry Award, and three Pushcart Prizes and work selected four times for The Best American Poetry and was included in The Best of the Best American Poetry 1988-1997, this amazing poet has written staggering amounts of beautiful poems. That is the reason why Kay Ryan in July, 2008, the U.S. Library of Congress announced that Ryan would be the sixteenth Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress for a one year term commencing in Autumn 2008, succeeding Charles Simic. Said Dana Gioia in is blog: "Over the past five years no new poet has so deeply impressed me with her imaginative flair or originality as Kay Ryan."

Dissertation of Kay Ryan...

I find Kay Ryan simply an amazing poet. Her wonderful poems are recognized by the public which allowed her to shoot to fame. Though her poems are often short, but all of them contains rich meanings. I think Kay Ryan writes poems to express her thoughts of her life. Now lets look into the Biography of Kay Ryan. She born in San Jose, California and was raised in several areas of the San Joaquin Valley and the Mojave Desert. She attended Antelope Valley College and received bachelor's and master's degrees in English from University of California, Los Angeles. Since 1971, she has lived in Fairfax, California, and has taught English part-time at the College of Marin in Kentfield.
Three poems by this Kay Ryan is:

They are very nice!

Lesson 1: Figurative Language

Fast rode the knight

Fast rode the knight
With spurs, hot and reeking,
Ever waving an eager sword,
"To save my lady!"
Fast rode the knight,
And leaped from saddle to war.
Men of steel flickered and gleamed
Like riot of silver lights,
And the gold of the knight's good banner
Still waved on a castle wall.
. . . . .
A horse,
Blowing, staggering, bloody thing,
Forgotten at foot of castle wall.
A horse
Dead at foot of castle wall.

1)How are the figurative language used in the poem? Give the specific word(s), explain what type of figurative language it is and why the poet chose to use this figurative language?

The figurative language used in this poem is simile. The sentence is 'Men of steel flickered and gleamed Like riot of silver lights' .The poet chose to use this simile because he wanted to describe how great the number of the knights are. Silver like cannot riot but the poet wanted to make the sight of gleaming amour obvious to the reader.

2)Tell us why you like this poem in no less than 100 words.

One reason why I like this poem is because it describes with detail the scene of war to the reader. With the banner waving at the castle wall, and the spurs hot and reeking. The sentence:""And leaped from saddle to war." showed the hurry of the knights to get to war, to their horse and immediately to war.Another reason why I like this poem is because the massive troops is described to the reader with the silver glimmering. It makes the reader know how great the army of knights would have been like. Adding this two factors together, it creates the scene of massive troops of knights eager to ride their horses to war.At the end of the poem, it shows pitifully the state of the horse the knight was riding. This poem shows two sides of war: one elegant and one death

Q:Singapore and Moscow are the two countries that got into the final round of the bid for the Youth Olympic 2010. You are the leader of the Singapore team, about to make a presentation to the committee your bid. Prepare a presentation.

Good afternoon,

Singapore is a multi-racial country, a busy port and a safe country. The people of the country live together in peace. Other than safety, Singapore has also hosted many other important events, including F1. Singapore is uniquely itself. Many things you can find in Singapore, you cannot find in other places, including the HDB flats. Though Singapore's land space is little, its location in Asia is very good helping Singapore to be both a port in sea and land. Tourism in Singapore is popular with it having many popular tourist attractions. Singapore has a very low crime rate. Besides, Singapore is also very clean. Having lots of plant life all around, Singapore is also known as the garden city.
In conclusion, Singapore is a clean, safe and green country.
Thank you.

Q:You are a student activist for animal preservation. You strongly believe animals should not be hunted for their body parts as medicinal ingredients.Draft a speech which you are going to make at a public forum on preventing cruelty to animals.

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am making a speech on the cruelty to animals. Have you ever thought how it feels to have your arms chopped off and you have been thrown onto the streets to survive on your own? That is exactly what happens to sharks been hunted for shark's fin. Rhinos have been killed just to get their horns for medicine while its body goes to waste. Animals also do have feelings. Though they are not as intelligent, they are still living things. They do feel pain, do feel scared. Can you imagine ending your life full with fear and pain?

The Moon bear, is kept in cages so that their bile can be extracted. The bile is used as a Chinese medicine. The life of the bears are worst than death. They are unable to move about and they will lose their freedom forever. The last thing they would probably see would be the cages. In a crude way of extracting bile, the bears are forced to lie flat on the bottom of cage for more effective ‘milking’. Often a metal ‘crush’ forces the bears to remain in the flat position permanently, in some cases for years at a time.

I hope you could understand that animals need you to end their sufferings.
Thank you.

Q: Singapore has all it takes to host Youth Olympic Games. Discuss.

As everyone would have known, Singapore got to host the Youth Olympics. This is a good opportunity for Singapore to spread its fame even further and gain more tourists. Singapore, in my opinion, has all it takes to host this special event. Singapore has the special floating platform to perform in, which allows viewers to enjoy beautiful scenery. Singapore is also unique. Why do I say so? Have you eaten chicken rice and seen HDB flats in other countries before? The food in Singapore, other than chicken rice, are unique, with a mix of different countries' taste. HDB flats are also both nice to live in and space-effective. Singapore has also taken part in many activities, including F1 and international conferences. With so much experience, it should be time Singapore took part in Olympics. Though it is only Youth Olympics, it is the first time this event is held. With Singapore's busy trade, unique features and its good geographical location, I believe Singapore has all it takes to host Youth Olympic Games.

Today's Diary 9/3

Thanks Lionell for your explanation in the previous diary post. Anyway, my class was tortured by hours of lecturing of critical thinking today. Should be same tomorrow.... But looking forward to the Camp. Especially the Milo Pool! Let me explain, I went to the same camp when I was Primary five and we were made to slide on a foam into a muddy muddy pond. The instructors said they poured Milo into the pond that is why the pond is brown. But when I choked on the mud water, it tasted NOTHING like Milo... And the A hut! That the camp we were made to live in. 4 solid wood boards attached to a frame made the bed. Actually quite comfortable when you had walked for miles in the day. But disgustingly, somebody abandoned thir underwear and let it lie on the hut floor for two days. Anyway I think you all should like the camp with a drumstick during lunch. Have a nice day!

Nothing but the truth: new ending

Sunday Weekly
Phillip Malloy exposed!
Reporter: Robert Duval
The "patriotic" boy, Phillip Malloy has been exposed of his deeds at last. The boy indeed had cheated the public of their feelings. From an interview with Miss Margaret Narwin, the teacher revealed that what she did was just to go with the school rules to remain silent when the National Anthem is played. It was Phillip Malloy's deficiency to listen to Miss Narwin's instructions that made the teacher have no other choice but to ask Phillip Malloy to go out of the classroom.
After interviewing Phillip Malloy, he finally admited that he hummed, not sing in the national anthem. He also admitted that he did not know the lyrics to the National Anthem. His previous lies had caused Miss Narwin to resign.
Phillip Malloy has also caused his school to be unble to get the school budget and caused the school much trouble. Ted Griffin commented that Phillip Malloy said that Miss Narwin was unpopular, leading to him saying the false facts of Miss Narwin. According to most students, they thought Miss Narwin was fair and Phillip was been unfair to Miss Narwin.
When Phillip was an unpopular boy with his classmates, he transferred school to Washington academy which he now still studies in. The Harrison School has sent a letter of apology to Miss Narwin and requested for her to return to school to teach which she rejected.
But even now, some people still argue that Phillip was not in the wrong. He just hummed to the tune of the 'Star-Spangled Banner' and was suspended. But what really is the truth? That, we may never find out.

Review on MapleStory the PC game

As many students would know Maplestory is a role-playing game which is played by many all over the world. There are many versions of MapleStory. One of them is MapleSEA which network covers South-East-Asia. In my opinion, the reason why so many people are addicted to this game is because the more we play, the more powerful our character gets which lets the player feel powerful too. Its kind of like dangling a carrot in front of a donkey. The true aim we will never achieve. Even the highest level player, level 200, still plays the game to compete in fame, fortune and skill. That is one of the reasons why so many people are playing:the game never ends. Lots of people are so addicted, they spend lots of money to buy in-game equipments to make them richer or more "cool". I too play the game but is currently far from reaching level 200. But I am still not desperate as to spend hard-earned money on a never-ending game. I actually found the game fun with me having characters in the second part: Halfway to completing the four parts.

Q: Imagine your group has just invented an electronic device that helps other students learn better in the classroom. Write a short press release that describes this new device and explain how it will promote learning

New electronic device to improve learning invented!
My group of researchers has just invented a new device to help students learn better in the classroom, the Learnobot! The Learnobot is a handy device which is programmed with education notes and linked to the teacher's computer. The Learnobot can also record the voice of the teacher in case the student is day-dreaming and teachers can also post revision notes onto the Learnobot. During class, this device can be the 'ears' of a pupil with the voice recorder and the student can come empty-handed to school with only the Learnobot, helping pupils rid of the textbook-bursting bag. Even the worksheets can be transferrsd directly to the student's Learnobots and submitted to the teacher wirelessly.
